Stud Farms and Covering Stations

Jockey Club of Turkey provides services to breeders through Stud Farms and Covering Stations located in various regions across Turkey, for the purpose of contributing to the betterment of the horse population by raising thoroughbred breeding to a desirable level through providing stallions of good origin for the benefit of horse breeding in general and furthering and providing an incentive for Thoroughbred/Purebred horse breeding within the confines of technical principles, and obtaining healthy and productive foals per scientific methods.

During the 2014 Covering season, a total 3119 mares were covered using 52 Thoroughbred stallions, of which 14 belong to the club and the remaining 38 are guests and 21 Purebred stallions, 9 from within the club and 12 from outside. Of the covered 3119 mares, 2604 have been confirmed to be pregnant, 288 mares have remained without foal, while pregnancy tests were unable to be carried out for the remaining 227 at the Jockey Club of Turkey Boarding Stud Farms and Covering Stations.

Attained pregnancy rate in our Stud Farm and Covering Stations for the year 2014 was 90.04%.

Adana / Seyhan Covering Station

Opened in 2000, the Adana Seyhan Covering Station is built on an almost 180.000 square meter area. The station houses an administrative building, housing facility for the Veterinarians, a hay/feed storage unit, a covering hall, four stallion boxes and 64 mare boxes.

There are a total of 19 mare paddocks, of which 6 are large turf paddocks and the remaining 13 are small sand paddocks, 5 stallion boxes, and a total of 6 stallion paddocks, where 2 are sand and 4 are turf paddocks.
 

One veterinarian, one veterinary medical technician, one stud supervisor, one administrative clerk, 8 grooms and 5 security officers are on staff at the Adana Seyhan Covering Station. Certain sections of the stud farm are being monitored round the clock with 8 cameras.

A 400 KVA transformer station provides power for Seyhan Covering Station. Additionally, a 110 KVA generator set and a 3 KVA uninterrupted power supply system provides support for the existing power system.

Adana Seyhan Covering Station provides services for breeders between January and June, and births and coverings during this time are monitored round the clock by experienced staff members.

İstanbul - Silivri Covering Station

Providing services for horse breeding since its opening in 2002, Istanbul Silivri Covering Station houses a 72-box mare stable made up of three blocks, and a 5-box stallion stable contained within a single building, spread over a 161,000 square meter area. The station also houses 4 turf paddocks for the stallions, 7 turf paddocks for mares and 5 rehabilitation paddocks, with a grand total of 16 paddocks in addition to a covering hall.

Services provided at the Istanbul Silivri Covering Station include rectal palpations to prepare mares for covering, pregnancy tests, birthing procedures, controls and necessary surgical procedures for caring for foals and their healthy development on a regular basis round the clock, in addition to regular mobile veterinary services for horse owners involved in Purebred and Thoroughbred breeding within the Thrace region. To this end, a staff of 23, with 3 veterinarians, 2 veterinarian assistants, 1 stud farm registration clerk, 4 private security officers, 1 stallion groom, and 12 mare grooms at the Istanbul – Silivri Covering Station.

Covering season at the İstanbul Silivri Covering Station commences on February 15 every year to provide services for the breeders, and runs through June 30th.

İzmir / Torbalı Covering Station

             

Opened in 2000, the İzmir Torbalı Covering Station is built on an almost 195.000 square meter area. Izmir Torbalı Covering Station provides services for breeders with 22 mare paddocks, 5 stallion paddocks, a total of 56 boarding mare stables spread over 3 blocks, 7 birthing stables contained in a single block, a total of 4 boxes of stallion stables, 3 quarantine boxes in a block, 1 Covering hall, 1 Laboratory, 1 two story administrative building and housing facility for the veterinarians, two housing buildings for the staff, and a staff cafeteria.

At the Izmir Torbalı Covering Station 2 Veterinarians, 1 Veterinary Medical Technician, 9 grooms and 4 security officers are working, all reporting to Izmir Racetrack Management Office.

 

Izmir –Torbalı Covering Station provides thoroughbred covering services for breeders in the Aegean region during the first half of the year. Mares arriving at the station for covering during this time are provided services as a guest, and are sent back to their respective stud farms following their final controls after June 30th.

Izmit Covering Station Management Office

Izmit Covering Station was established in 1973, at Bayraktar Village, 17 Km outside Izmit, a township of the city of Kocaeli. The station was later named Izmit Central Covering Station in 2001, following the transfer of permanent resident mares and foals to this location once the Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm was built, and has been providing services as a “covering station” to day, for many years now.

Staff at the İzmit Covering Station Management Office consists of the Station Manager, Assistant Station Manager (Equine Breeding and Equine Health), a Financial-Administrative Affairs Supervisor, A Technical Services Supervisor, 7 Veterinarians, 6 Veterinary Medical Technicians, 3 Clerks, 39 Grooms, 7 Security Officers and other cleaning staff members, making up a full time staff of 111 personnel, working round the clock in 3 shifts.

Built on an almost 715,000 square meter area, the station currently features a 323 box mare stable complex, a 20 box stallion stable complex, a total of 62 paddocks of various sizes, with 5 sand paddocks, 22 turf paddocks, and 44 small oxygen paddocks, 2 post-operative boxes; a modern equine laboratory, lead covered X-ray room, an operating room, a birthing facility, a covering hall, social facilities for the workers, housing units for the personnel, an administrative building, hay and alfalfa storage facility, hay sheds, feed silos, a feed preparation unit and water storage tanks within the premises. Also, a full range of round the clock veterinary services are provided to the almost 65 private stud farms in the surrounding Kocaeli area by means of a mobile veterinary service.

In addition to what has been listed above, the modern equine hospital the construction of which began in September 2013 has been completed, and following the transfer and delivery procedures, it is planned to start operations in the beginning of 2015.

Births at the İzmit Covering Station commence in the month of January and continue on till the beginning of June. Birthing procedures are carried out in an 18 box birthing ward by taking any and all hygienic measures, and carrying out all necessary pre and post birth tests and care for the mares and the foals, and the treatments of the sick foals are carried out in boxes specially prepared inside the birthing room. A total of 3 Haflinger mares provide wet nursing services to foals that are not in a position to receive mother’s milk for whatever reason at the Covering Station, as well.

Covering procedures are carried out between February 15 and June 30th, where appropriate mares are allowed for covering following uterus and ovarian examinations and therapy utilizing ultrasound equipment. It is always our ultimate goal to ensure that as many mares as possible are in foal, and new generation healthy foals, to convey our breeding activities into the future, are born.

Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm

The largest permanent Boarding Stud Farm raising Thoroughbred race horses within the Jockey Club of Turkey umbrella, Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm was established in March 1st, 2001. Spread over a 4,996,000 square meter area, the Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm has an 18 km perimeter. The facility lies along a 6 km stretch of the Izmir – Bursa highway, offering pleasant views of the grounds. Access within the stud farm is provided via a total of 13 kilometres of compacted gravel service roads, 20 kilometres of compacted gravel service roads between the paddocks, and 4.7 kilometres of perimeter security roads. There is also a total of 84,500 meters of wire paddock fencing within the facility.

 

Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm has 87 turf paddocks with a combined area of 2,827,000 square meters, 6 sand paddocks with a combined total area of 51,000 square meters, 27 stallion paddocks with a combined area of 68,000 square meters and 7 hospital paddocks spread over 9,000 square meters, with a grand total of 188 paddocks, spread over a 3,089,000 square meter area, 61 of which are for treatment and gathering, spread over a 134,000 square meter area. Such an impressive figure firmly places the Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm among the select few major stud farms in Europe.

Karacabey also features a total of 19 storage sheds for hay, feed and bedding; and of these sheds, 7 are double and the remaining 12 are single units. There is also an enclosed feed unit for storing concentrated feed in addition to three 200 ton capacity feed silos, and one 300 ton capacity, with a combined total capacity of 900 tons, and an electronic scale of 60 tons.

The first stage works of the two-storey hospital building with a total surface area of 3200 m², and 17-metre wide, 1650-metre long silica sand training track have been completed.

Horse population at the Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm, where 600 to 750 mares are covered, 300 yearlings are raised every year, with 350 permanent mares, reaches its peak at 1150 -1200 heads during the January – June season with the coverings, mares that check in at the farm as guests and their foals. Commencing on February 15, covering season runs through June 30th. Population at the farm decreases down to 850 - 900 heads at this time, as the guest mares leave the stud farm with their foals and yearlings that will be two years old in the next year and shall be competing on the racetrack check out.

There are a total of 840 boxes available for the mares and the foals in 15 stable blocks within Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm. There is also a covering hall, a 16 box stallion complex consisting of four stallion stables featuring four large boxes each, as well as an equine hospital featuring a 10 box quarantine stable, an operating room, a laboratory, in addition to 8 treatment boxes.

A staff of 156 full time and seasonal employees, one stud farm consultant, 24 special security officers, and 26 special cleaning workers provide services at the stud farm 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, working three shifts. Care and feed programs that are tailored so that horses staying at the farm may benefit from the paddocks at the maximum level are implemented at the Karacabey Boarding Stud Farm, by taking seasonal conditions into account. Horses are given special feed rations based on their age, gender as well as pregnancy status, and are kept under veterinary supervision round the clock. Veterinary examinations, laboratory analyses and breeding activities geared towards maximum fertility are carried out on a regular basis. Foals are ensured to make the switch from the farm to the racetrack in the best condition possible through practices that enable them to develop into healthy horses.

Surgical unit located within the Equine Hospital performs a multitude of procedures starting with hernia operations, as well as C-Sections, colic surgeries, periosteal strip procedures, joint aspiration procedures, etc. High standards and veterinary service quality is maintained through the use of digital X-Ray, endoscopy, ultrasound analysis, blood work equipment at the facility for the purpose of diagnosis.

Mahmudiye Boarding Stud Farm

Dedicated to purebred breeding and operating as a boarding farm, the Mahmudiye Boarding Stud Farm was opened in 2001 on a 1,750,000 square meter area. The farm features a total of 45 paddocks, 12 of which are grass, 9 of which are sand, 20 stallion paddocks, and 4 hospital paddocks. Furthermore, there are a total of 6 sheds, where all the bedding and rough feed of the stud farm are stored, and a closed feed unit where concentrated feed is stored.

Horse population at Mahmudiye Boarding Stud Farm where approximately 300 to 350 mares are covered and 50 yearlings are raised every year reaches some 400 heads during the January – June period with the stallions and mares that check in at the farm under guest status for births and covering, and their foals. Covering season commences on February 15, and runs through June 30th at the farm. During this term, with the departure of the guest mares that leave with their foals, and the yearlings that will be three years old, and will be racing the next year, the horse population is reduced to 130.

The farm features an administrative building, the newly built equine hospital, a veterinary office, guest housing unit, a covering hall, a staging building, enclosed hay sheds, a feed storage unit, in addition to a 2020 meter, 25 meter wide turf race track together with a grandstand facility that seats 400, and auxiliary facilities, which is used for local racing activities. Mahmudiye Boarding Stud Farm also houses a training centre for breeders who would like to practice and train their horses with an 1800 meter long, 20 meter wide training sand track, an enclosed training ring, as well as a saddling area.

There are a total of 306 boxes at the Mahmudiye Stud Farm, with 20 boxes in 2 stall blocks for the stallions, 174 boxes for the mares in 4 stall blocks, 64 boxes in 2 stall blocks set aside to accommodate yearlings and two year olds, and 48 boxes in 2 stall blocks reserved at the Training Centre for horses brought in for training.

A staff of 52 full time and seasonal employees provides services at the stud farm 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, working three shifts. Care and feed programs that are tailored so that horses staying at the farm may benefit from the paddocks at the maximum level are implemented at the stud farm, by taking seasonal conditions into account. Horses are given special feed rations based on their age, gender as well as pregnancy status, and are kept under veterinary supervision round the clock. Veterinary examinations, laboratory analyses and breeding activities geared towards maximum fertility are carried out on a regular basis. Foals are ensured to make the switch from the farm to the racetrack in the best condition possible through practices that enable them to develop into healthy horses.

The veterinarians carry out genital examinations for mares using ultrasonography devices, checks and cares for covering procedures, births, and the healthy development of foals, endoscopic examinations, radiological – blood works, and necessary surgical procedures (C-section, ovarectomy, hernia, periosteal strip, etc.), and protective medical services (vaccination, parasite control, etc.).

Şanlıurfa Covering Station

Şanlıurfa Purebred Covering Station is built on a 989,696.03 square meter area, and is completely enclosed with wire fencing.

The covering station features 50 boxes in 3 stall blocks for the mares, 12 boxes in 2 blocks for the stallions, a 1 block covering hall, one administrative building, one cafeteria, one 36x8 m outdoor shed, one security building, 1 enclosed hay/feed storage unit, 1 steel feed silo, 50 meters of perimeter walls, a main entrance gate, and so on.

Additionally, among the completed works for the farm are one 300 ton capacity water storage unit, one 750 ton capacity irrigation pond, 2 septic tanks, drinking water and firefighting water line systems, and sewer and drainage systems. A pole type transformer station has also been installed at the farm.

Also, work has been completed for the road connecting the covering hall and the stallion stalls, as well as access roads within the farm itself.

Mare paddocks are periodically planted with “gasil” (a combination of barley, oats and wheat) as part of regular grounds keeping efforts at the station.

A total of 22 staff members serve at the Şanlıurfa Covering Station, that is, one veterinarian, one veterinarian health technician, 13 grooms (6 of which are seasonal), 3 assistant workers (one seasonal), one warehouse clerk, one accounting clerk, one driver, and one seasonal construction maintenance worker.

Opened on June 14, 2003, the Şanlıurfa Purebred Covering Station has proven its success with a pregnancy rate of 92.7% during the 2003 covering season, 95.91% during the 2004 covering season, 98.16% pregnancy rate during the 2005 covering season, 93.98% pregnancy rate during the 2006 covering season, 96.34% pregnancy rate during the 2007 covering season; 93.84% pregnancy rate during the 2008 covering season; 94.90% pregnancy rate during the 2009 covering season; 95.65% pregnancy rate during the 2010 covering season; 96.46% pregnancy rate during the 2011 covering season; 96.88% pregnancy rate during the 2012 covering season; 98.82% pregnancy rate during the 2013 covering season; and 93.15% pregnancy rate during the 2014 covering season.

Activities at the Şanlıurfa Covering Station, coupled with the Şanlıurfa Racetrack has been a breath of fresh air for horse owners in the region, and Şanlıurfa Covering Station has set an example for the horse owners in terms of establishing a proper feeding regimen for the horses as well as hygiene.
